A Call for New Approaches to Quantifying Biases in Observations of Sea Surface Temperature
نویسندگان
چکیده
T he global surface temperature record is constructed by blending sea surface temperature (SST) with air temperature over land and ice (see also section S1 of the supplement , which is available online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-15-00251.2). Both SST and land air temperature require adjustments to account for changes in, for example, depth or height of measurement, instrumentation, and siting. Improvement of estimated biases in historical measurements of SST will have a major effect on estimates of global surface temperature change and their uncertainty (Jones 2016).

Historical Remotely Sensed Sea Surface Temperature Data for Prediction of Coral Bleaching Event in Kish Island, the Persian Gulf
The capability of Degree Heating Weeks index (DHWs) was examined for prediction of bleaching events in the coral reef communities of the Kish Island located in the north of the Persian Gulf. In doing so, weekly Sea Surface Temperature (SST) values (in 1°×1° spatial resolution) prepared by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coupled with documented bleaching events, such...
متن کاملEffects of instrumentation changes on sea surface temperature measured in situ
Measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) are an important climate record, complementing terrestrial air temperature observations, records of marine air temperature, ocean subsurface temperature, and ocean heat content. SST has been measured since the 18th century, although observations are sparse in the early period. Historically, marine observing systems relied on observations made by sea...
متن کاملNear-Surface Air Temperature Retrieval Derived from AMSU-A and Sea Surface Temperature Observations
A 10-m air temperature (Ta) retrieval using Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit A (AMSU-A) and satellite-derived sea surface temperature (Ts) observations is presented. The multivariable linear regression retrieval uses AMSU-A brightness temperatures from the 52.8and 53.6-GHz channels and satellite-derived daily sea surface temperatures to determine Ta. A regression error of 0.838C using 841 match...
متن کاملTrend of the Caspian Sea surface temperature changes
The interaction between sea and atmosphere has profound effects on the regions climate. Meanwhile, the sea surface temperature is considered as one of the most effective components of water bodies, and the controller of many atmospheric behaviors. Because of the importance of sea surface temperatures effects on atmospheric elements and also given the role of global warming on land and sea surfa...
متن کاملA Three- Dimensional Model of the Caspian Sea
Observations of the Caspian Sea during August-September 1995 are used to develop a three-dimensional numerical model to be used in calculating temperature and current. The model has variable grid resolution and horizontal smoothing that filters out small scale vertical motion. Data from the meteorological buoy network on the Caspian Sea are combined with routine observations at first-order syno...
